CBSE schools to conduct exams on mobile phones

BANGALORE: It is known that techology saves time and makes life easier. To reaffirm this fact, some CBSE schools in city have now gone the techonological way. Students will soon type in their answers on a mobile phone.

Incidentally, the test will not be an assessment for the students alone, but an assessment of the teachers. This initiative is taken up by a private firm, Education Initiatives, the project Detailed Assesment, has been adopted by 13 schools in the city. The test is held through mobile phones: The teacher sends the question via bluetooth to the handsets and students choose their options. The final received data of students is uploaded to a centralised server.

“We get a diagnosis of the students performance, individually and as a class. With this, the teacher can deal with the probelms of a student individually. It helps teachers understand what students absorb from what is being taught,” says Usha Shankar Ram, headmistress, Delhi Public School (Bangalore-South division).

Principal of Sishu Griha Montessori and High School, Sujatha Mohandass agrees: “Questions cannot rote and answer the questions. We have taken up the tests for Maths and Science subjects, as it requires high application skills which can be developed through such tests. The teachers are also able to analyse which areas of the subject needs more attention of the concerned teachers.”

The administrators however disagree. These tests are not competitive and there is no ranking, is what they opine. Director of Presidency School, Kasturinagar, G

Thangadurai says that this exposure allows students to understand how testing is outside the school’s ambit and allows them to learn to adapt to new modes of testing. They also say that while the extra costs have to be borne by the students.
