Medical council of India (MCI) has permitted 10,000 MBBS seats from this year in view to improve the terrible doctor-patient ratio in India. This sanction wound comes in to force from this year.
The new sanction of seats would result in increase of 10,000 doctors in the next five year and the total pasouts would be increased from 35,000 to 45,000 every year.
The chairman of MCI, Shiv Kumar Sarin also agreed to sanction 66 new medical colleges.
The MCI also reduced the condition to have 10 acres of land instead of the old stipulation of 25 acres. But it restricted that the building size should not be smaller than the already stipulated space for 25 acres.
MCI also called the Army, Railways and ESI Corporation to start new medical colleges with the aim to increase the availability of doctors in remote areas.
The huge increase in MBBS seats would require more faculty and MCI recommended to extend the retirement ages for the teaching staff from 65 to 70 years to meet out the demand.
